For nearly half a century, the New York Yankees (NYY) had a “no beard” policy. If a player was signed onto the team, they had to follow the no facial hair rule, which dates back to 1976, under owner George Steinbrenner.
Hal Steinbrenner, George’s son and managing general partner announced, “…after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward… It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy.”
Although it remains to be seen what “well-groomed” will be defined as, players will be given more freedom beginning this season.
