For more than four decades, the New York Yankees played Frank Sinatra’s (Theme From) New York, New York song after every home game in Yankee Stadium, regardless of the game’s outcome.
The song will still be played, but it will only be played after the team wins and a rotating selection of songs will be played after loses. After a loss at Yankees Spring Training home complex, George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, “That’s Life” by Sinatra played.
The New York, New York tradition began in 1980 after then owner George M. Steinbrenner heard the song in a Manhattan nightclub. Steinbrenner immediately sent a letter to Sinatra’s representatives, who said, “He would be very pleased to have his song played in the stadium.”
The news comes after the decades long “no beard” policy announced last week. The recent shifts are reflections of the Yankees looking to modernize some of their traditions while trying to maintain their iconic brand.
