Wisconsin Governor Facing Backlash on Proposed State Law Language

Tony Evers, Wisconsin’s Governor is facing more and more backlash for supporting a budget proposal that would change and remove gender terms from state law.

If passed, some verbiage Evers would like to change includes “father” would be replaced with “natural parent;”  “mother” to become “parent who gave birth to the child;” a “mother” who was artificially inseminated would be called “inseminated person;” and “wife” or “husband” would be replaced with “spouse.”

Gender-neutral terms would appear in the budget proposal in sections including marriage, birth, divorce, taxes, and even hunting and fishing licenses.

The governor’s office said the gender neutral language was inserted to “harmonize Wisconsin’s statues with the Supreme Court decision that recognized same sex marriages.”
