Wildfires in North & South Carolina

More than 175 wildfires erupted over the weekend in North and South Carolina, and are forcing hundreds of evacuations. Wildfires are not common in the Carolinas, but low humidity and dry and windy conditions are contributing factors to the spread.

The Carolina Forest, about 10 miles west from the Myrtle Beach, SC coastal area has burned through 1,600 acres and is 30% contained so far. This is the largest area that has been reported.

Governor of South Carolina Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency on Sunday as the fire scorched through over 4,200 acres in his state.

About 50 miles east of Charlotte, the Uwharrie National Forest in NC burned through about 400 acres and is roughly one-third contained. The Blue Ridge Mountains, about 40 miles south of Asheville is also fighting between 400-500 acres and hasn’t reported any containment so far.

The cause of the wildfires has not been determined, but an investigation is pending.
