West Virginia Governor Signs Bill Protecting Women’s Spaces

West Virginia’s Governor Jim Justice said he is proud to sign the ‘Women’s Bill of Rights’ in adopting House Bill 5243.

Governor Justice, also a girl high school basketball coach for many years and said, “This is absolutely essential in many, many ways for us to stand up for women and do the right thing. This is silly what’s going on, absolutely ridiculous.”

The new legislation is aiming to achieve the following:

  • Define sex-based terms used in state law

  • Declare interest in protecting single sex spaces

  • Ensure the accuracy of public data collection

Advocate for women, Riley Gaines said this bill isn’t just aimed at women’s sports; it pertains to all aspects of men going into women’s prisons, restrooms, sororities, etc.

When signed, West Virginia will join Oklahoma, Tennessee, Nebraska and Kansas.

Gaines said this bill is “necessary and urgent” that this gets done across the nation.
