Mount Marapi, (“Mountain of Fire”) one of the most active volcanos on Sumatra Island, in Indonesia, erupted, leaving 23 climbers dead and 12 injured.

Marapi began erupting on December 3, spewing toxic smoke and a cloud of ash about 9,800 feet into the air, blanketing the surrounding villages in ash.

During the time of eruption, 75 hikers were nearing the peak. All 40 surviving climbers have been located and are safe.

The volcano is located on the Pacific Ring of fire, in the province of West Sumatra, and stands at nearly 9,500 feet.
