USWNT Advances to CONCACAF W Gold Cup Final

The U.S. Women’s National Team battled through a waterlogged pitch yesterday and defeated Canada in a penalty kick shootout in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup semifinals yesterday. U.S. outscored Canada 3-1 in the shootout, which followed a 2-2 draw after 90 + 7 minutes of regulation play and 30 minutes of overtime.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football’s (CONCACAF) international soccer tournament has been featuring women’s teams since 1991.

Controversy as to whether the game should have continued on the field after torrential rain fell and the field was full of large sections of standing water. Both teams struggled with the elements and horrible field conditions.

Canadian Coach Bev Priestman said, “It’s obvious the game was unplayable. We put in a lot of work in a game plan, and within minute one, it’s thrown out the window.”

A CONCACAF spokesperson said that it’s “solely at the discretion of the referee as to whether the field is safe and playable.”

Scoring for the US was Jaedyn Shaw and Sophia Smith in regulation time, then Sophia Smith scored again in the penalty shootout, along with Alyssa Naeher and Lindsey Horan.

The U.S. will face Brazil, who defeated Mexico 3-0 in their semifinal match, on Sunday, March 10 at 8:15 EST in Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
