If you're looking for a ride in Minneapolis come May 1st, you won't find an Uber or a Lyft. Both companies have announced they are pulling out of Minneapolis once the city council's new legislation goes into effect.
On May 1st, the new law will mandate Uber and Lyft to pay drivers a minimum of $1.40 per mile plus $0.51 per minute. The rule also mandates that they pay drivers while they are waiting for a request for a ride. Currently, drivers are paid once they have a passenger.
CJ Macklin, Lyft spokesperson said the company has decided to cease operations in Minneapolis when the law goes into force on May 1st. Uber also echoed a similar sentiment.
