UAW Strike Update

The “Big Three Auto Makers” strike has been going on since September 15th, and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel yet. There are currently about 12,700 workers on strike between automakers Ford, General Motors (GM) and Stellantis. Stellantis has the highest amount at 5,088, followed by GM with 3,600 and Ford with 3,300 workers on strike.

Ford, GM, and Stellantis deem UAW’s proposals as “unsustainable.” Ford believes their last offer right before the strike began was “historically generous.” They have all proposed a 20% salary increase over 4- 1/2 years, but the workers are demanding 40%. The strikes are causing ripple effects through several other auto plants. GM had 2,000 layoffs at their Fairfax, Kansas’s plant. Ford has laid off 600 employees and 68 at Stellantis.

Earlier this week, United Auto Workers (UAW) president, Shawn Fain said, “If we don’t make serious progress by noon on Friday, September 22nd, more locals will be called on to stand up and join the strike. Autoworkers have waited long enough to make things right at the big three. We’re not waiting around and we’re not messing around, so noon on September 22nd is the new deadline.”
