According to a U.S. Military official, the U.S. Embassy compound in Bagdad was attacked around 4:15 this morning, Friday, December 8 by approximately seven 60 mm mortar rounds.
The attack was launched at the U.S. and Coalition forces in Bagdad’s heavily protected Green Zone, which houses Iraqi government buildings and embassies.
An Embassy spokesperson said, “We again call on the government of Iraq, as we have done on many occasions, to do all in its power to protect diplomatic and Coalition partner personnel and facilities… We reiterate that we reserve the right to self-defense and to protect our personnel anywhere in the world.”
In a statement from the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani he said, “…targeting diplomatic missions is something that cannot be justified.” He also labeled the attack an “insult to Iraq, its stability and security,” and promised to “pursue the perpetrators of the attack…and bring them to justice.”
The military official stated there was minor material damage and no casualties or injuries currently.
