Two adults have been arrested in Amherst, Virginia after seven fourth graders became sick after eating gummies bears from a bag that tested positive for fentanyl residue.
The gummies have been sent out for further testing, but initially tested negative for foreign substance.
On Tuesday, December 12, one student, who shared with six other students, brought in the bag of gummies from home. Five of the seven students at Central Elementary School were sent to the hospital for treatment after falling ill and experienced nausea, headache, vomiting, signs of being lethargic, and some muscle spasms. All students were treated and returned home.
Clifford Dugan was charged with contributing to the delinquency/abuse of a minor and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held without bail.
Nicole Sanders was charged with possession of a controlled substance and contributing to the delinquency/abuse of a minor. She is being held on a $2,500 bond.
Additional charges are a possibility after further investigation.
The student’s sibling also had a bag of gummy bears, but they did not test positive for fentanyl.
The school was cleaned after the incident for safety precautions. Amherst County Public Schools Superintendent William Wells said, “There’s no indication of any fentanyl at our school.”
