President Trump is planning to sign an executive order to make English the official language of the United States. In the nearly 250 years of existence of America, there has never been an official language.
English has been formally established as the official language of more than half the U.S. states, but never in the federal government.
In the 2000, President Clinton signed executive order 13166, “Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency.” Order 13166 required federal agencies and recipients of federal funding to provide language services for those with limited English proficiency.
Trump’s new executive order will rescind Order 13166 and will be sent to Congress for approval.
