On This Day in History

On April 16, 1929, the Cleveland Indians became the first MLB team to feature numbers on the back of each player’s jersey.

The New York Yankees were also supposed to debut jersey numbers on this day, but their season opener was rained out.

The numbers on the back of the jersey helps scorekeepers, broadcasters and fans identifying players easier. Having numbers on the jerseys became a staple in the league, with every team sporting them by the 1937 season.
