They’re Bringing Cursive Back

Most states that have formerly dropped the teaching of cursive/script writing, is starting to bring it back to curriculum.

In 2010, cursive writing was officially eliminated from Common Core Standards for K-12 education. Cursive writing was not a requirement any longer, but rather, as optional.

It is argued that in the age of technology, tablets and computers are replacing paper and pens, thus, creating the bigger need to teach keyboarding instead. The opposite side of that is that the upcoming generations cannot read original documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, or the Constitution, personal letters or cards, or sign a signature.

According to mycursive.com, a website that tracks cursive writing requirements nationwide, there are now currently 21 states requiring some sort cursive writing instruction.

The 21 states currently with some sort of cursive writing requirement are; Alabama, Arizona Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
