Texas Suing General Motors

Ken Paxton, Texas’ Attorney General is suing General Motors (GM) over how they handle driver data. In June, Paxton opened an investigation on GM’s deceptive, misleading business practices affiliated with their unlawful collection and illegal selling of Texan’s private driving data to insurance companies without their consent or knowledge.

Paxton says GM deceives customers by encouraging them to enroll in OnStar Smart Driver and like programs. Paxton said vehicle owners didn’t know that by joining such programs, their data would be collected and sold. “Our investigation revealed that General Motors has engaged in egregious business practices that violated Texans’ privacy and broke the law.

We will hold them accountable.” Paxton said. “Companies are using invasive technology to violate the rights of our citizens in unthinkable ways. Millions of American drivers wanted to buy a car, not a comprehensive surveillance system that unlawfully records information about every drive they take and sells their data to any company willing to pay for it.”
