After Hurricane Milton tore through and severely damaged the roof of the Tampa Bay Rays home venue, Tropicana Field, it left the team scrambling for a place to play for the 2025 MLB season.
The Rays will play at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees Spring Training and Single A Tampa Tarpons facility in Tampa.
Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said in a statement, “We deeply appreciate that the Yankees have graciously allowed us to play at Steinbrenner Field for the 2025 season… The hurricane damage to Tropicana Field has forced us to take some extraordinary steps, just as Hurricanes Helene and Milton have forced thousands of families and businesses in our community to adapt to new circumstances as we all recover and rebuild.’’
Steinbrenner Field was chosen above other nearby Spring Training ballparks due to being the “most major-league-ready” options as well as having the largest capacity of any other stadiums. Steinbrenner Field can hold 11,026 and has 13 luxury suites.
The downfalls of the Rays temporary home include Florida’s heat, humidity and frequent rainy weather, as it is an outdoor, not indoor stadium.
Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees managing general partner said the Yankees are, “happy to extend our hand to the Rays.” Steinbrenner added, “In times like these, rivalry and competition take a back seat to doing what’s right for our community… which is continuing to help families and businesses rebound from the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.”
