Suspected Murderer of Laken Riley Pleads Not Guilty

Jose Ibarra, the Venezuelan migrant accused of murdering Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student, entered a plea of not guilty in court on Friday. Ibarra is facing 10 counts related to Riley’s murder.

Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, signed a bill requiring jailers to check the immigration status of people in their custody and to apply it to help enforce federal immigration laws after the death of Riley.  Kemp said of the bill that it “became one of our top priorities following the senseless death of Laken Riley at the hands of someone in this country illegally who had already been arrested even after crossing the border.”

Ibarra, 26, illegally entered the U.S. in the El Paso, Texas sector in September 2022, and lived in a shelter in New York City at first. Ibarra was arrested for endangering a child, charged with a felony, and released. He left NYC to live with his brother in Athens, Georgia. Ibarra has been listed as part of the deadly Venezuelan prison gang according to the Internal Department of Homeland Securities documents.
