Suspect in Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Arrested

After a McDonald’s employee recognized the person of interest in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Mangione gunned down 50-year-old Thompson (using a silencer on the firearm) on Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan when he was on his way to a UnitedHealth Group investor conference. Video surveillance showed Mangione in several places near the scene and he waited for several minutes for Thompson to come by, calling it a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack” by NY Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Responding officers began questioning Mangione, who was acting suspiciously, at the McDonald’s he was eating in about 9:14 a.m. ET. Mangione is said to have had same fake identification (along with multiple others) he used checking in to a Manhattan hostel, a US passport and the firearm, consistent with the one used in the murder, on his person. Clothing and a mask, also consistent with those worn in the videos and still pictures by the suspect were retrieved. Additionally, authorities recovered a 3 page, hand written mini manifesto, which is said to speak of Mangione’s “motivation and mindset.”

Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said, “He was in possession of a ghost gun that had the capability of firing 9mm round and a suppressor... the gun appears to be a ghost gun and may have been made on a 3D printer. ”

Police stressed that the public’s help played a major role in helping find the suspect.
