San Francisco’s Pier 39 Overrun by Sea Lions

San Francisco’s Pier 39, in Fisherman’s Wharf, is being taken over by roughly 11 hundred sea lions. The sea lions are being attracted by an unusually high number of anchovies that are currently in the bay area.

There haven’t been this many sea lions in that area in 15 years. The sea lions started showing up on the pier in 1989 and have been a tourist attraction ever since.

Besides the pungent smell they are letting off, local businesses are glad the sea lions are attracting more customers.

The sea lions will end up migrating south to the Channel Islands to mate within a few weeks.
