Ron DeSantis Appoints Vacant U.S. Senate Seat

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis appoints Florida’s current Attorney General Ashley Moody to fill Senator Marco Rubio’s seat. President-elect Donald Trump named Rubio to be Secretary of State, leaving an empty Senate seat for DeSantis to fill.

Moody, 49, will serve until 2026 when Rubio officially announces his resignation from the Senate. DeSantis hinted earlier that his appointee would be “someone that could run in two years and then run after that and potentially be up there a long time.”

Moody, a fifth generation Floridian, has been Florida’s Attorney General for the past 6 years, a commercial litigator, a federal prosecutor and in 2006 became Florida’s youngest elected circuit court judge at age 31. Moody has spearheaded issues including human trafficking and opioid abuse.

Moody said at the press conference, “I’m ready to show up and fight for this nation and fight for President Trump to deliver the America First agenda on Day 1.”

Moody precedes Pam Bondi, Trump’s pick for the U.S. Attorney General and leader of the Justice Department.
