Australia’s national airline, Qantas Airways will be flying into court for selling thousands of tickets on flights that were already canceled. During the time frame of May 2022 through July 2022, Qantas allegedly sold over 8,000 that they knew would never take flight. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said yesterday they started legal proceedings in the Australian federal court against the airline. They are claiming the airline had “engaged in false, misleading or deceptive conduct by advertising tickets it knew would never fly.” Said tickets continued to sell anywhere from about two weeks and some as long as 47 days after the airline knew they had already been canceled.
The airline put travelers through a difficult process of claiming a refund, and in some instances, they were only offered Qantas travel credits, instead of reimbursement to their original means of payment. If found guilty, Qantas could be facing record-breaking fines in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
