“Problematic” Jeopardy Answer

On the October 28 episode of Jeopardy!, host Ken Jennings was left apologizing to a contestant over a “problematic” answer.

Contestant Heather Ryan, a woman who was wearing glasses, chose the $400 clue under the “Complete the Rhyming Phrase” category. The clue, attributed to a quote attributed to poet Dorothy Parker read, “Men seldom make passes at…”

Defending champion Will Wallace rang in with the correct answer of, “What are girls who wear glasses?”

After Wallace’s answer, Jennings replied, “Yeah, a little problematic, sorry Heather.” Wallace with a head tilt and a nod replied, “Very.”

Although the clue and answer didn’t seem to bother Ryan, who seemed to shrug off the apology and appeared to not be offended, it was slammed on social media platforms by many who considered it sexist and an insult to Ryan’s intelligence.
