Pope Francis Dies at 88

Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church died just after 7:30 a.m. local time on Monday.

The Pope had been experiencing many health issues in recent years including two abdominal surgeries and multiple respiratory infections. In the last two months, the Pope spent 5 weeks in the hospital suffering with bronchitis, which developed into double pneumonia.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell released a statement...

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Frances returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Pope Francis was elected in 2013, serving his 12th anniversary of his papacy. His body will be on display in an open casket in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and buried at the ancient Basilica of St. Mary Major, as per his wishes. 

Cardinals will elect a new pope during a conclave starting in about 15-20 days.
