Pilot Shortages=Unaffordable Flights in the U.S.

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

For your average American, flying is on its way, if it isn’t already, to becoming unaffordable due to the demands from pilot unions and the extreme shortages of the profession. Pilots know of these deficits, which are predicted to reach a shortfall of roughly 30,000 over the next several years/decades. It is thought to be the failure of training enough professionals, and an increase of others who are retiring early.

Oliver Wyman, of a management-consulting firm says, “The supply of new pilots will grow, but not enough to offset a continuing wave of retirements.” Pilots are going all in with their demands, sticking to their guns and not backing down to the negotiations they are trying to set in place for their future contracts. An example is the United Airlines pilots looking to increase their salaries in the area of 34.5 – 40.5 percent over the next four years, along with better benefits, retirement packages, better work-life assurances and job security.

American Airlines pilots are also jumping on the bandwagon and pushing for the same work conditions United Airlines pilots are pressing for. In an attempt to “reduce carbon emissions,” France is restricting short flights in their country. Some are now saying, although expensive, they are at least grateful to have the options to fly in America, while France just recently announced their stoppages of flights travelling under a two and a half hour mark.
