A Pennsylvania woman, believed to have fallen into a sinkhole, is presumed to be dead after two days of digging through mud and rock.
Elizabeth Pollard, 64, was assumed to be searching for her cat on Monday and after being reported missing, authorities found her car behind a restaurant about 20 feet from sinkhole above a long, closed mine. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Steve Limani estimates the mineshaft to be at least 30 feet deep and said there had been diminishing oxygen levels and no sign of life in the shaft.
Limani said, “Unless it’s a miracle, most likely this is a recovery.”
Pollard’s 5-year-old granddaughter was found in the car unharmed, despite the freezing temperatures.
Limani added, “We’re not quitting… We are going to continue to work through this.”
