At the closing ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, Paris’ mayor, Anne Hidalgo returned the Olympic flag to the IOC president, Thomas Bach, who then handed the flag over to Los Angeles mayor, Karen Bass. Los Angeles hosted in 1932 and 1984, and is the third city in history to host the Olympics three times when it hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics.
In “Hollywood fashion” Tom Cruise, in his Ethan Hunt character from Mission Impossible, descended on a wire from the top of the Stade de France, retrieved the Olympic flag from Simone Biles, and rode out of the stadium with the flag affixed to the back of his motorcycle.
Cruise then skydived to Los Angeles’ Griffith Park, where he handed the flag to mountain biker, Kate Courtney, who passed it to four-time track and field gold medalist, Michael Johnson, who handed it over to skateboard medalist Jagger Eaton who rode through the streets to Venice Beach where the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performed.
