On This Day In History

July 11th, 1914...

On July 11th, 1914, George Herman "Babe" Ruth made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut.

Ruth would pitch seven strong innings for the Boston Red Sox beating the Cleveland Indians 4-3. He allowed just 5 hits over the first 6 innings. In the seventh inning he would be touched for 2 runs on 3 singles and a sacrifice before being relieved.

Born on February 6th, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland, Ruth signed as a pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles in 1914 when he was 19. Later that summer he was sold to the Boston Red sox where he would make his MLB debut.

He quickly developed as a pitcher helping the Red Sox make the World Series 1916 and 1918. Ruth set a world series record with 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.  He would have an 89-46 career record for the Red Sox.

Before the 1920 season, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees so he could finance the musical No, No, Nanette.

Ruth switched to playing the outfield for the Yankees and became one of the greatest attractions in baseball until he retired in 1935. The Babe would earn the nicknames of "The Great Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat."

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936. The New York Yankees retired his number in 1948.
