On This Day In History

July 11th, 1804...

One of the most famous duels in American history happened on July 11th, 1804 between Vice President Aaron Burr and his long-time political antagonist Alexander Hamilton. Burr would fatally shoot Hamilton who was a leading Federalist and the chief architect of America's political economy.

The two would meet at 7am on July 11th, at the dueling grounds near Weehawken, New Jersey. It was the same spot that Hamilton's son had died defending his father's honor three years earlier (1801).

Burr shot Hamilton in the stomach, where the bullet lodged next to his spine. Hamilton was taken back to New York. Hamilton would die the next day.
