On This Day In History

On July 8, 2000, tennis superstar, Venus Williams, won her first Wimbledon tournament. Her victory was against defending champion, Lindsay Davenport. Venus Williams became the first black female to win the title since Althea Gibson won back-to-back titles in 1957 and 1958. 


Venus went on to win a total of 7 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister Serena and 2 Grand Slam mixed titles. The Williams sisters also won 3 Olympic Gold Medals as doubles in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
