On this Day In History

On July 5, 1946, the bikini is introduced in Paris. French designer Louis Réard unveiled the “daring” two-piece bathing suit at a popular swimming pool in Paris; the Pricine Molitor.

Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion. Although European women first wore two-piece bathing suits in the 1930’s, only a sliver of the midriff was revealed, the navel was covered, and it consisted of a halter-top and shorts. The bikini wasn’t successful in the U.S. until the early 1960’s.
