On April 16, 2018, Kendrick Lamar, rapper from Compton, California, became the first rapper to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his 2017 album, DAMN. This was the first time this award was given to a musical work outside of the classical or jazz genres of music.
It was a unanimous decision to award Lamar and was “a big moment for hip-hop music and a big moment for the Pulitzers.”
