On This Day In History

On June 24, 2021, at 1:22 a.m. the Champlain Towers South condominium building in Surfside, FL collapsed, taking 98 lives that morning. Thirty-seven people were rescued, which took several weeks for crews to sift through the debris.

Engineers from engineering firm Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates (WJE) were hired to investigate the collapse, and they agree with preliminary reports from federal investigators with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on several issues including, construction didn’t meet building codes, flawed designs overloaded certain areas of the structure, certain critical areas of the structure was degraded, and modifications and additions to the structure over its 40 years made matters worse.

It is said to take another year to determine the official, initial failure of the building.
