On This Day In History

On June 18, 1812, the House of Representatives voted to declare war on Great Britain. President James Madison signs the declaration and the War of 1812 began. It was during this war that the British burned down the White House, the Capitol building and other surrounding buildings. The war lasted two years and eight months and ended in a draw with the Treaty of Ghent.
