On This Day In History

June 17th, 1885...

On June 17th, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor.

A gift of friendship from the people of France, the statue was shipped in 350 pieces packed in more than 200 cases across the Atlantic Ocean.

The statue, made of copper and iron was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland. It would become known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.

The Statue of Liberty is one of today's most famous landmarks.
