On This Day In History

June 10th, 1775...

A Continental Army is born...

At a meeting in Philadelphia on June 10th, 1775, John Adams proposed to Congress that the men laying siege to Boston should be considered a Continental Army led by a general.

Following the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the men of New England armed themselves and rushed to surround British forces in Boston.

Adams felt appointing a general and calling it the Continental Army, the British would think that the colonies were united. At the meeting Adams would suggest Virginian George Washington to command the Continental Forces.

On June 15th, Adams would formally nominate Washington as commander in chief of the Continental Army.

On June 17th, Washington would lead the newly named army in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
