On This Day In History

On June 10, 1692, Bridget Bishop was the first colonist to be tried, found guilty and hanged in the Salem Witch Trials for practicing witchcraft.

In the winter of 1692, a group of eight young females were said to have exhibited strange behavior including, trans-like states, seizures, muscle spasms, delusions and contortions.

The females incriminated their neighbors saying they cast spells on them.  Hundreds were accused of being witches, and 19 were convicted and hanged. It is still unclear if this was a grudge against neighbors, a prank gone wrong, or some type of food poisoning.
