On June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord was given the go-ahead by Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower to invade Normandy’s coast in France. The day is now commonly known as D-Day, and today marks the 80th anniversary of the invasion.
By the day’s end, 155,000 Allied troops consisting of Americans, Canadians and British stormed Normandy’s beaches by parachute, aircraft and naval vessels.
The northern part of France would be freed within three months and the troops would head into Germany from the east.
