On This Day In History

On May 31, 1859, the iconic clock know as Big Ben, rang out over Westminster, London for the first time. The clock tower stands at 315 feet tall, each dial is nearly 23 feet in diameter; the minute hands are nearly 14 feet long and the bell weighs over 13 tons. Construction began in 1843. The actual name of the tower Big Ben is housed in is called the Elizabeth Tower.
