On May 24, 1935, the MLB held its first night game. Crosley Field in Cincinnati had lights installed and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 on that evening.
President Roosevelt symbolically turned the lights on from Washington, D.C. The game drew in 25,000 fans. The Reds ended up playing 8-night games that year, against every National League team. Even with their losing record of 68-85, attendance rose 117%.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, most teams followed suit and added lights to their stadiums.
