On This Day In History

On May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge, spanning over the East River connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, opens. Construction took 14 years and cost $15 million. Over 600 workers used 6,740 tons of material.

At the time it was built, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first steel-wire suspension bridge ever constructed and at 1,595 feet, it was also the longest suspension bridge.

Everyday, the bridge has over 100,000 vehicles, 2,600 bikes and 4,000 pedestrians that cross it.
