On May 21, 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first female pilot to make a solo transatlantic flight, which came five years after Charles Lindbergh accomplished the feat.
Earhart traveled more than 2,000 miles in less than 15 hours from Newfoundland. Earhart earned a Distinguished Flying Cross by the U.S. Congress.
It was on her attempt to fly around the world in 1937, that her plane disappeared near Howland Island in the South Pacific. There was no trace of Earhart, Fred Noonan, (her navigator,) or the aircraft they were flying.
