On This Day In History

On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards were handed out in the Blossom Room of the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the ceremony at a dinner party for roughly 250 people. In its first years, the winners were announced before the actual awards ceremony.

In 1939, it is speculated the Oscars got their name from an executive director remarking that the statuettes looked like her Uncle Oscar.

In 1942, the results began using the secret ballot voting system and the winners were announced during the live-broadcast ceremony using the sealed envelope system.
