On May 6, 1937, the airship, Hindenburg burst into flames in Lakehurst, New Jersey while it was trying to moor. The Hindenburg was the pride of Nazi Germany and was the largest airship ever built.
Thirty-six passengers and crewmembers were killed and there were 61 survivors.
It was reported that a leaking gas cell on the vessel, let hydrogen mix with the oxygen (from the air outside), sparked, and a buildup of static electricity ignited, leading to the fire.
