On May 1, 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicated New York City’s
Empire State Building. Hoover symbolically “pressed the button, turning on the lights
of the building” from Washington, D.C.
At that time, the Empire State Building was the tallest skyscraper standing at 1,250
feet high, 102 stories; 1,454 feet to the top of the lightning rod. In 1972, the World
Trade Center took the title as the tallest skyscraper at 1,368 feet high. In 2010,
Dubai’s Burj Khalifa Tower was built at 2,716 feet tall, and is currently the tallest
skyscraper in the world.
The Empire State Building construction began on March 17, 1930, during the Great
Depression and only took 13.5 months to complete.
