On April 14, 1865, actor John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln. While attending the comedy Our American Cousin, with his wife, Major Rathbone and his fiancée, Booth entered the Presidential Box and shot President Lincoln in the back of his hear at about 10:15 p.m. in Ford’s Theatre. Rathbone was said to have taken hold of Booth, but Booth slashed Rathbone’s wrist with a dagger, jumped over the Presidential Box and fled the scene. Authorities caught up with Booth on April 26.
