Polio was a highly contagious disease that could infect the brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis and attacks on the nervous system. Over 3,000 died in 1952 and over 58,000 cases were reported in the U.S. and was the major cause of disability in children. By April 1955, the vaccine became licensed and was available for use.
