On This Day In History

On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz Prison closes down. Located on a 12-acre island (Alcatraz Island) in San Francisco’s Bay, Alcatraz was established in 1934 and could house over 200 inmates. AKA “The Rock” or “America’s Devil Island,” Alcatraz was considered the most secure - maximum-security prison known for its inescapability. Alcatraz opened to the public in 1973 as part of the National Park system.
