On This Day In History

On March 3, 1931, the “Star Spangled Banner” became the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics on September 14, 1814, after he witnessed the American flag surviving an overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry in MD, during the War of 1812. Although formally ‘designated as the national anthem’ by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, it wasn’t officially signed into law until 1931 by President Herbert Hoover.
