On This Day In History

On February 21, 1885, the Washington Monument was dedicated in Washington, D.C. Built in honor of America’s first President and Revolutionary War hero, George Washington. The monument was originally proposed in 1800, and construction didn’t begin until 1848. The 555-foot-tall obelisk didn’t open to the public until 1888.
