On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. Glen was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marines and became one of the first men chosen my NASA to be an astronaut in 1959. Glenn was aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft, which took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
